What happened

Information Requirement No. IE-0719-2026 asks authorized insurers to describe AI systems in use, tested or planned, and whether any of them influence insurance decisions.

Puerto Rico's Office of the Commissioner of Insurance issued Information Requirement No. IE-0719-2026 to authorized insurers, according to McDermott Will & Emery. It asks about AI systems they use now, have used, or are building or testing. The request covers underwriting, claims, fraud, customer service, marketing, compliance, document processing and investments, and asks whether AI influences insurance decisions.

What is verified

The source's own statement, as linked above. Nothing beyond it has been independently checked by us.

What remains unclear

It is a request for information, not a rule on how insurers may use AI. It is addressed to insurers, not producers. We have not read the requirement itself, including its response deadline or penalties, so this item relies on a law firm's summary.

What it means for your book

Insurers authorized in Puerto Rico will need a list of their AI systems, the vendors behind them and where each one affects a decision. Regulators elsewhere have used surveys like this one as the first step toward guidance.

  • Carriers writing in Puerto Rico: confirm who owns the response and when it is due.
  • List every vendor tool that touches underwriting or claims decisions, including ones still in testing.
