In short

A citation makes an AI answer easier to inspect. It does not finish the inspection. The reviewer still needs to establish that the document is the right one and that the cited passage supports the output.

NIST recommends reviewing and verifying sources and citations in AI outputs during pre-deployment evaluation and ongoing monitoring (NIST Generative AI Profile). For client-facing insurance work, published defense-counsel guidance recommends independently verifying material information against policy forms and source documents (Independent Agent). Neither source turns a citation into an automatic approval.

Check identity before wording

Confirm the insured, document type, carrier or issuing entity, effective period, and version. A statement copied accurately from last year's packet can still be wrong for the current assignment.

For a proposed review record, capture the filename or stable identifier, relevant edition, and page or section. If the tool links to a folder or the first page of a long file, ask for a more precise location before treating the result as traceable.

Read the passage in context

Compare the output with the cited language and relevant surrounding material. Look for conditions, exceptions, endorsements, and limitations that a short excerpt may not represent.

Keep the source statement separate from interpretation. “The supplied schedule lists this endorsement” is a document observation. “This claim would not be covered” is a different conclusion requiring a different review. Do not let a polished summary blur that boundary.

Test a conflict, not only a clean match

As an editorial evaluation method, include an authorized packet with an amended quote or conflicting versions. Ask the tool to identify the conflict rather than silently choose one. Record how the reviewer resolves it and which version controls the task.

Include missing-source cases too. If the policy form is unavailable, a document workflow should be able to report that limitation. Inventing language to complete a table is not a useful substitute for the missing form.

Make verification visible in the output

Use separate fields for source observation, interpretation, reviewer, and unresolved question. A source-backed draft can remain pending even when every link opens.

The goal is not to make every reader repeat the entire process. It is to make the basis of the final output inspectable and to prevent an unsupported inference from being disguised as a sourced fact.
